E-Bike Laws in Canada

For off-road use, many provinces require:

  • Vehicle registration

  • Off-road vehicle permit / plate

  • Liability insurance

  • In some cases, a valid driver’s license or minimum rider age

⚠️ Important: Regulations vary significantly by province, municipality, trail system, and land type.

Where you ride matters:

  • Some trails require permits or memberships

  • Certain parks and conservation areas prohibit motorized vehicles

  • Private property may require owner permission

  • Public roads and bike paths are generally prohibited for off-road dirt bikes

👉 Please always check your local provincial and municipal regulations before riding.

FAQs

In Canada, off-road electric dirt bikes generally don’t require a driver’s licence when used off-road.

If you ride only on private property, insurance is often not required. For public trails or managed riding areas, riders may choose to carry off-road vehicle insurance and, in some cases, a trail pass or permit, depending on the operator. As a general reference, basic off-road insurance commonly falls in the range of $100–$400 per year, with actual costs varying by rider profile and provider.

Access guidelines can vary by province or trail operator.

An electric dirt bike is best for riders who want off-road fun with quiet performance and simpler upkeep than a gas bike.

It’s a great fit for:
• New riders who prefer smooth power delivery and no clutch
• Riders who want a quieter ride
• People who want no tailpipe emissions and lower day-to-day running costs
• Experienced riders who like instant torque and responsive control on technical terrain

You get a mix of performance, easy operation, and a cleaner ride experience compared with gas bikes.

They’re all popular off-road e-bike brands, and the best choice comes down to your riding style, budget, and whether you plan to customize.

Caofen is often chosen for a more refined, “finished” feel out of the box. It's well-known for the built-quality, the unibody frame. Surron is known for a lighter, playful feel and a large aftermarket community for tuning and upgrades. Talaria is commonly picked for strong stock performance and overall value. 79bikes is a newer challenge in the category, with a modern design approach, more advanced features, strong power on tap, and solid value for the price.

Overall rating: 5.0 / 5 from 23 reviews.

le moteur pousse vraiment fort dans les montées. pas besoin darriver avec énormément de vitesse pour passer

79BIKE Lynx

This bike feels more playful than brutal. Theres plenty of power when I want it, but the reason I keep grabbing it is how easy it is to throw around on dirt. Thats a very different experience from the heavier high-power machines I've ridden.

79BIKE Lynx

black and gold was the right choice. looks like a proper little race machine

79BIKE Lynx

jaime surtout le feeling plus léger. sur les petits sentiers ça change complètement la façon de rouler

79BIKE Lynx

12kw cest largement assez pour moi. les accélérations sont fortes mais le vélo reste facile à placer dans les virages

79BIKE Lynx

I came from a heavier electric dirt bike and the difference in trail feel is obvious. The Lynx is easier to correct when I choose a bad line, easier to lean into tighter turns and doesn't feel like it's dragging me around when the trail gets technical. The 12kW peak power is still more than enough to make open sections exciting, but the chassis is what I appreciate most. The FastAce front suspension deals with repeated hits well and the rear shock keeps traction when the ground gets chopped up. I also like that the Bluetooth speaker is built in instead of something zip-tied to the bars. Range has been more than enough for the kind of off-road sessions I do, and four-hour charging makes turnaround pretty painless.

79BIKE Lynx

The battery range is way more than I normally need for one session. I ride pretty aggressively so I'm obviously not expecting the full 120 km every time, but I still finish long days without stressing over the percentage.

79BIKE Lynx

I dont really care about chasing top speed. For me the fun is how quickly it picks up out of corners and how easy it is to flick into the next section.

79BIKE Lynx

FastAce fork feels legit. not something I feel like I need to upgrade right away which is rare

79BIKE Lynx

the speaker is goofy and I love it. didnt buy the bike for that feature but it adds a lot to casual riding days

79BIKE Lynx

I ride mostly on private trails with short climbs, roots and a few sections where the ground gets really loose. The Lynx handles that combination well because it never feels like one part of the bike is fighting another. Motor, brakes and suspension all feel matched.

79BIKE Lynx

la suspension FastAce travaille vraiment bien quand le terrain devient cassé. beaucoup moins de chocs dans les bras

79BIKE Lynx

What surprised me most is how easy it is to move around underneath me. I expected 146 lb to feel like a lot more once the trail got technical, but the weight distribution makes it feel manageable. On loose climbs the mid-drive keeps pulling without making the rear end feel weird or disconnected.

79BIKE Lynx

Charging in around four hours is convenient because I can ride hard in the morning, plug it in during the afternoon and still have options later.

79BIKE Lynx

très bon équilibre entre puissance et maniabilité. jai essayé des machines plus lourdes qui deviennent fatigantes beaucoup plus vite

79BIKE Lynx

black and purple looks ridiculous in person, in a good way. definitely gets attention at the riding area

79BIKE Lynx

The brakes are excellent. Those big 220mm rotors give me plenty of confidence when a downhill section gets steeper than I planned.

79BIKE Lynx

the 19 front 18 rear setup gives it a proper dirt bike feel. doesnt look or ride like a bicycle with a motor slapped on

79BIKE Lynx

bluetooth speaker on a dirt bike sounded kinda unnecessary... now I use it basically every ride lol

79BIKE Lynx

I spend most of my time on narrow forest trails where a big heavy-feeling bike gets tiring fast. The Lynx feels much more playful than I expected. Changing direction is quick, the front end doesn't feel lazy, and the suspension keeps the bike composed when the trail suddenly gets rocky.

79BIKE Lynx

The mid-drive setup is what stood out to me first. Power feels centered in the bike instead of pushing from the rear, which makes it easier to place the bike where I want on uneven climbs and tight dirt sections.

79BIKE Lynx

les freins sont vraiment puissants sans être brutaux. sur les descentes rapides cest exactement ce que je voulais

79BIKE Lynx

the bike feels way lighter on its feet than I expected from something with this much power. super fun when the trail gets tight

*In Canada, e-bike regulations vary by province and region. Riders should familiarize themselves with the specific laws in their area. Generally, the maximum speed limit for e-bikes is 32 km/h, which is the default maximum speed for our e-bikes. As the rider, it is your full responsibility to comply with local laws and use the e-bike safely and responsibly. Be sure to check for any specific regulations, such as age requirements, helmet laws, and other applicable rules in your province or municipality. For comparison, in the United States, our e-bikes meet the standards of a Class 2 e-bike, which are defined as bikes that can be powered by a motor up to 32 km/h with a throttle.

*The rated travel distance for our E-bikes is determined under ideal conditions, which include a speed of 32 km/h, flat road surfaces, good weather conditions, and the bike being in optimal condition. It's important to note that the actual travel distance may vary due to factors such as the rider's weight, road conditions, weather conditions, and the overall condition of the bike. The actual travel distance may be shorter than the rated distance. We cannot guarantee any specific travel distance and advise riders to plan their trips accordingly.

*The top speed listed in the specifications represents the legal speed limit for on-road use in most regions. Some models are capable of higher speeds for off-road or special-use purposes. Please consult your local EMMO dealer for details regarding the top speed of this model. It is the rider’s sole responsibility to comply with all applicable laws and regulations when operating this vehicle, including but not limited to speed restrictions.
